SUMMARY:We'll Meet Again
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Bryan Thurlow giving his talk “We’ll Meet Again”\, postponed from January 2023 \nBilly Jackson\, a pearly king from Bethnal Green\, vividly describes what life was like when he and his sister were evacuated to an East Anglian farm at the outbreak of WW2 and the horrors of the blitz in London. A 45 minute performance piece/story \n\nBrian Carline is unable to attend for his talk “Our Street” \n“Copenhagen Street was no different from any street in any industrial town or city in the 1950s. Its landscape was identical to streets in Bolton\, Birmingham or Bermondsey during this decade. Not only were the streets similar\, their inhabitants all had the same tales to tell too. These people were working class\, living from week to week\, most just managing to pay the rent. Unfortunately\, some could not. This book describes one such street\, home to a community of ordinary hardworking and poor families.” \n[Read more at Waterstones]

SUMMARY:The Story of Spitalfields: From Huguenots to Hipsters
DESCRIPTION:London is a city of constant change and nowhere is this better illustrated than in the history of Spitalfields. Formerly the fashionable home of Spanish ambassadors to the English Courts of the 16th and 17th centuries\, its first major development was courtesy of the Huguenots fleeing the religious persecution of Protestants in France in the late 17th century. They laid out a grand estate of well-appointed terraces designed specifically for their trade and “Weaver Town” was born and prospered. \nSpitalfields became the landing point for various waves of 19th century migrants and became one of London’s notorious “rookeries” characterised by overcrowding and poverty. Then came the hipsters. Attracted by relatively cheap rents\, “edgy” bars and restaurants started to move in. Independent retailers soon followed; former industrial premises were re-purposed as event\, pop-up\, and creative spaces; and the entrepreneurs of the new digital economies moved in. “Hipster Town” was born. \nJoin Mark Rowland to hear the fascinating stories of Spitalfields that tell of change\, adaptation\, decline and regeneration.
